Finding variegated Monstera in the USA in local stores

Small Shops and Nurseries

Some small plant shops and boutiques carry variegated Monstera. If you’re lucky enough to have a shop nearby that offers rare or collector plants, ask if they ever sell variegated Monstera. Your feedback can influence their future stock!

Typically, this is one of the most expensive ways to purchase a variegated Monstera, and quantities are limited. Fortunately, you’ll avoid shipping and benefit from the personalized advice available from shopping small and supporting a local business.

Large Stores

Due to the difficulty of mass producing variegated Monstera, they aren’t available from wholesale suppliers of large nurseries and garden centers. (Note: Costa Farms is currently working on producing Thai Constallations, but recently announced they will not be ready until at least 2022).

As a result, your best chance for finding a variegated Monstera at a hardware store, grocery store, or large nursery is by accident!

Variegation is caused by a random mutation. Ordinary Monstera can sometimes display sport aka chance variegation, becoming a variegated plant! You’re most likely to experience this lucky phenomenon at a large store with a big stock of plants. The best part is, you can purchase these plants as ordinary Monstera without the markup.

When treasure hunting for spontaneous variegation, always check the stems! Monsteras can put out leaves with a few patches of variegation, but this pattern will not continue in future leaves unless it is present in the stem or petiole where new growth forms.

Finding Variegated Monstera for Sale in the USA Online

If you’re having a hard time finding variegated Monstera for sale in the USA in person, searching online will expose you to more variety. In addition to larger established plants, you can find cuttings, nodes, and baby Monstera.

You’ll also find a larger range of prices, from great deals to extreme price gouging. While it feels great to score a deal, always remember that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Ebay

Ebay is one of the best sources for variegated Monstera, with lots of listings and more added every day! You can create custom search alerts, filter by price, and search past listings to see the winning bids.

Most Ebay listings are auctions, although some items can be purchased. Using Ebay is more complicated than buying a plant at a store, and it can be confusing at first. Familiarize yourself with Ebay’s auction system for your best chance at getting the winning bid on your dream plant.

Ebay charges high seller fees of 10%, which is reflected in the prices. In addition, bidding wars can inflate prices. By keeping an eye on the available auctions, and looking for hidden gems, you can find some great deals! Just be prepared when buying Monstera via auction that you might have to lose a few auctions before you get lucky.

Social Media

Social media sites, like Facebook, allow you to connect with other Monstera lovers. There, you can purchase or trade directly from hobby growers.

Try joining houseplant groups in your state or local area. In my experience, local hobby sellers can give you the lowest prices of all! You won’t have to worry about shipping, and you can take part in growing the local houseplant community. Facebook Marketplace is also a good place to search for plants if you live in an urban or suburban area with lots of local postings.

In addition, there are lots of USA national groups for buying, selling, and trading rare plants like variegated Monstera. Find these groups by searching Facebook for rare plant purge or BST (buy, sell, trade) groups. Some good group examples are “Tropical + Rare Plant Purge BST” and “Time to Splurge and Purge BST”.

Finally, there are even Facebook groups dedicated to reviewing online plant sellers! You can search for sellers to see other’s experience with them before purchasing.

Etsy

Plant shops on Etsy have less availability than Ebay, but you don’t have to bid! Etsy takes a high commission as well, so be prepared for high prices. In my experience, Etsy has some of the highest prices for variegated Monstera. On the other hand, it is very easy to search and make purchases.

Make sure to purchase from Etsy shops with lots of positive reviews!

Online Nurseries

If you don’t have a rare plant nursery near you, don’t worry! There are many plant shops in the USA that have variegated Monstera for sale online. Furthermore, some even sell online only. You can find online shops via Google searches, plant group recommendations, or social media.

Here are a few of the more well known, positively reviewed online plant shops that I have seen offer variegated Monstera in the past. I have no affiliation with these sites, and just collected this list in my own variegated Monstera searches.

Variegated Monstera are uncommon, so they are often not in stock. Don’t let this discourage you; check back regularly or subscribe to catch a restock.

Importing plants from international sources

For variegated Monstera buyers in the USA, you may be interested in purchasing variegated Monstera from sellers in countries where prices are lower. Before you do this, make sure to learn about all the requirements.

Buying plants internationally requires a phytosanitary certificate to pass customs, and an import permit for quantities greater than 12 plants. Typically, the cost of the phytosanitary certificate and international shipping is significant compared to the price of a single plant. Make sure your international seller is aware of the requirements and prepared to meet them.
